We need to read scripture in three ways – by considering the context (what is this, who wrote it, to whom, who does it apply to, and what does it mean for me?), culture, and Christ. For example, Jeremiah 29:11-12 is a well-known scripture written to the exiles in Babylon by Jeremiah. It was a promise to the Israelites, demonstrating God's faithfulness to his people. The goal of scripture is to lead us to Christ, to be more like him, in love, obedience, and loving others.
