Christ-like Character, Part 1 – by Justin Renton

June 7, 2026

Sermon recap:

John 1:14 describes Jesus as being full of both grace and truth. Like a honeybee carrying pollen and a sting, wisdom requires knowing when to extend grace and when to speak truth. Grace brings life, restoration, and compassion, while truth provides guidance, correction, and protection.

Jesus taught his followers to be innocent as doves and shrewd as snakes (Matthew 10:16), combining pure motives with wise discernment. We are not called to judge harshly, but to evaluate situations humbly, carefully, and with love. Grace without truth becomes flattery, while truth without grace becomes brutality.

Discernment begins by checking our motives. Are we acting from love or frustration? Grace is often needed when someone has repented, needs time to process, or when a relationship is not yet strong enough for difficult conversations. Truth is needed when guidance is sought, when action is urgent, or when God has entrusted us with responsibility. In every situation, tone, timing, and tenderness matter as much as the message itself.

In every major conflict, whether political, personal, or spiritual, there is almost always a sliver of validity on both sides. Grievances are real. Injustices are felt. Leaders on the “wrong” side can even articulate legitimate frustrations.
